To recall, GunZ: The Duel, or GunZ as most players know it, was created by the South Korean-based firm MAIET Entertainment way back in 2003 during the boom of PC shooter games. It was a free-to-play game using microtransactions for premium items. Players could perform over-the-top, gravity-defying actions like wall running, tumbling, stunning, and blocking bullets with swords, inspired by action films and anime.
Meanwhile, MAIET launched GunZ International in 2006, and many were attracted to the online third-person shooting (TPS) game due to its unique gameplay, especially animation canceling (k-style). Its notable publisher was ijji, which was acquired by Aeria Games in 2012. In May 2013, it shut down. Following that, in May 2014, GunZ 2: The Second Duel was released on Steam.
Here in the Philippines, many Filipinos have played this online game, usually in computer shops or internet cafes. I myself also played the game when it was initially released, and the experience is different from other shooter games. I practiced K-style (Korean Style), the gameplay style that involves canceling the animation of swords and weapons. An example of a basic K-style technique is a Swap Shot: you shoot one weapon, switch to the secondary weapon, and shoot that, then switch back. Because of these rapid and repetitive combinations, the keys on my laptop—especially W, A, S, and D—have worn out and require repair.
With the closure of the official GunZ server, many players looked for private or unofficial servers, clones of the original. These GunZ private servers offer several features, including anti-lead, anti-cheat measures, field-of-view (FOV) changes, camera distance adjustments, texture configurations, and cosmetics (skins). They also include ELO systems, balanced weapons and armor, custom maps, various game modes, and events with rewards.
Did you also miss playing the original GunZ? Ready to crash your keyboard and mouse once again? To get notified when it launches, add it to your Steam wishlist. Let's go—or rather, let's rock!
