Garena, the creator of Free Fire, has announced the esports roadmap for 2025. These plans include international tournaments and important updates to the competitive formats and rules of the battle royale game.
Check out the highlights:
- Two major international tournaments:
- Esports World Cup (EWC): Free Fire taking place from July 15 to 20
- Jakarta to host the flagship Free Fire World Series (FFWS) Global Finals in November
- Innovative new tournament rules such as a Champion Rush format and double elimination points that will foster more strategic gameplay
- Free Fire's Global Talent Development program, which seeks to empower the community through dedicated workshops and mentorship from industry professionals
Esports World Cup and 2025 FFWS Global Finals
This year's roadmap highlights two major international events where the best Free Fire teams will compete.
From July 15 to 20, the eighteen best squads will gather for the 2nd edition of the Esports World Cup: Free Fire in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, which will determine who advances to the FFWS Global Finals.
For the first time, the FFWS Global Finals will take place in Jakarta, Indonesia over three exciting weekends in November, pitting the top 18 teams for the championship title.
FFWS Southeast Asia 2025
The path to worldwide dominance begins in April 2025 with FFWS leagues in five regions: Brazil, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa, Pakistan, and Southeast Asia (Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam).
FFWS SEA 2025 will be held in Hanoi and Bangkok during the Spring and Fall seasons, respectively. From April 25 to June 15, 18 teams will compete in the Spring edition via direct invitations or local qualifiers, with the top teams heading to the EWC Free Fire in July.
Format Upgrades
In 2025, Garena will update the format of all Free Fire tournaments, international and local, to make competitions more exciting for players and fans. Instead of the usual 3-day final weekend, tournaments will now occur over 2 days: Point Rush on the first day, followed by Grand Final.
Here are the key changes to Free Fire Esports' competitive formats and rules in 2025:
- Last Game, Double Elimination: In the last game of each matchday during the Knockout Stage, players will earn double points for each elimination. This makes the end of the day a great chance to climb the leaderboard.
- Champion Rush Point: During the Grand Final of the FFWS Global Finals, teams will race to reach a set Champion Rush Point. The first team that gets the next Booyah will win the tournament. If no team achieves this after the 8th game, the team with the highest score will be declared the Champion.
- Unique Active Skill rule: Each team member must use a different active skill. This requirement encourages teams to adapt and show different playstyles.
Free Fire Global Talent Development Program
Free Fire will begin a Global Talent Development initiative this year as part of Garena's dedication to local communities and esports. Through workshops and industry coaching, the program helps teams, athletes, and content creators reach their potential. The program will be detailed later.
