League of Legends (LoL) maker Riot Games announced that it will merge Southeast Asia (SEA) servers on January 9, 2025, with the rollout of patch 15.1.

This long-requested SEA server merge was revealed through a post on the official League of Legends (Philippines) Facebook page.

The announcement read:

At last! LoL Players on PH, TH, SG/MY/ID servers can soon play together on one server.

Patch 15.1 starts the first season of League's new seasonal model, continuing from where Arcane Season 2 ends. Explore the stories of Noxus and its strong champions with new gameplay updates, skins, game modes, mini-games, and champions.

The server merge will happen during the same downtime as patch releases and will take place one server at a time. Once your account is moved to the merged server, you will not be able to access your old local server. The old servers will also be unavailable during the patch downtime.

According to Riot Games, they're doing this server merge "to create the best possible experience for every game you play and to bring more players across the region together."

Here's what you can expect with the upcoming LoL SEA server merge as per Riot Games.

Improved Matchmaking Experience
With a larger pool of players, matchmaking will be faster and more accurate. Whether you're queuing for ranked or are a new player looking for a balanced battle, you can expect to be paired with teammates and opponents that match your skill level with closer precision.

Smooth, Low-Latency Gameplay
Say goodbye to major lag spikes and connection issues. By centralizing our server infrastructure, we're bringing you smoother gameplay across all locations involved. It's time to play like the pro you are without the frustration of connection hiccups.

More details on the LoL SEA server merge

Here are some of the answers to the players' FAQs (frequently asked questions).

Schedule
The merge of League of Legends SEA servers is slated for January 9, 2025, when patch 15.1 is released. Expect about four hours of downtime during this patch update.

What do I have to do?
You need to update the LoL game client when patch 15.1 is rolled out. Keep in mind that, like with previous patches, you won't be able to purchase RP (Riot Points) during the downtime.

Things That Will Transfer
Riot ID, Remaining RP, Champions and skins (ward skins, too), Friends List, Hidden MMR Value (Adapted to the new region), Summoner Level, Honor Level, Emotes, Rune Pages, Summoner Icons, XP Boosts, BE Balance, Hextech Crafting Inventory, Champion Mastery Levels, Statistics (Games played, takedowns, wins, etc.), Loading Screen Borders, Item Sets, Eternals Progress, Challenges Progress, Mission Progress, Loot Milestone Progress, Event Pass Progress, Clash Trophies, Clash Banners, Clash Flag Frames

Things That Will Not Transfer
Victory Points, Forum Badges, Clash Match History on the Thailand/Philippines server, Clash Club Affiliations on the Thailand/Philippines server

I play on multiple LoL servers. What should I do if I have a desired account to carry on to the merged server?
All your accounts will transfer to the new server, so you won't lose any of them. Once the transfer is complete, you can choose which account to log into and play with. You will still be able to access all your accounts on the merged server using your login credentials.

Besides this merged server, can I take this opportunity to transfer to other LoL servers?
As usual, you can still transfer accounts to other regions, but free transfers are not available during this server merge.

Will items or RP be priced differently in the merged LoL SEA server?
You will still be able to pay for RP (Riot Points) using the same local currency that you used on your previous server.

How will the server merge affect my latency (ping)?
If you play League of Legends in Thailand or the Philippines, you might experience a ping increase of about 20ms. However, this change is unlikely to affect your overall gameplay. You can expect a comparable ping rate to VALORANT in these locations.

After the server merge, will the game and client still be localized in my local language?
Your game and client language options will stay the same.

Will there be any changes to Player Support following the server merge?
Player Support for the Philippines, Thailand, and Singapore/Malaysia/Indonesia will remain the same. You will receive support in the language that matches the Region of Residence information on your account. This means you should not notice any changes in your Player Support experience.

Does this server merge impact LoL Esports in the region?
Earlier this month, Riot Games announced updates to the League of Legends Championship Pacific (LCP). They shared details about the promotion and relegation (P&R) system for the tournaments. The P&R tournament serves as a pathway into the LCP, which is the top-tier regional competition. It is the only way for teams in each region to qualify for global events like MSI and Worlds.

Riot Games wants to make the LCP more accessible beyond the established domestic leagues. One way they are doing this is through a wild card slot in the P&R tournament. So far, participating regions for the wild card slot include the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia, with opportunities for other regions as well. More details about the wild card slot will be shared next year.

If you recall, League of Legends SEA was moved to Riot Games servers from Garena in January 2023, which faced several issues like errors and lag. However, problems like high ping were resolved with the deployment of local servers.
