Globe Telecom has reported a worrisome 18.6% increase in cable theft incidents in the Greater Manila Area (GMA) during the first half of 2024. According to the telco, this uptrend undermines efforts to expand connectivity amid growing demand.
Specifically, 906 cable theft cases were documented by Globe from January to June 2024, a substantial increase from the 764 cases recorded during the same period in 2023. In June, the number of cases was the highest this year, with 169 incidents.
Stealing incidents impacted Globe's cable segments in Project 8, Aurora, and Roosevelt in Quezon City. In addition to these hotspot areas, cables in Manila, Makati, and Las Piñas are also frequently targeted.
A concerning trend of increasing cable theft in the metropolis was evident in the fact that GMA accounted for approximately 61.55 percent of the 1,472 cases reported nationwide in the first half of this year.
Globe said this escalation poses a serious challenge to its efforts to enhance and expand its network across the region.
Joel Agustin, Globe Head of Service Planning and Engineering, stated:
We have seen a concerning increase in cable theft incidents in the Greater Metro Manila area, which also hosts a sizable population of our customer base. This means that for every cable cut, our individual customers lose precious hours of productivity, while businesses are deprived of their income potential.
Agustin also mentioned that fiber cuts could have a more significant impact in the region, as it is the country's economic center and seat of power:
Fiber cuts are an urgent problem to solve, and we cannot do it alone. Our goal is to deepen our cooperation with government agencies, local government units, barangays and law enforcement authorities so that together, we can tackle this menace and bring perpetrators to justice.
Globe continues to urge the public to stay vigilant and promptly report any sightings of cable theft to the nearest barangay or police station.
