Globe warns users vs new vishing scam – fake NTC call

In an advisory, Globe warns its customers against a new vishing (voice phishing) scam in which fraudsters pretend to be National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) officials.

The modus operandi is like this: scammers call potential victims, claiming that their mobile number has been linked to illegal activities. The fraudsters would then demand money from their targets. If they don't comply, they will say they will arrest them.

Anton Bonifacio, Globe Telecom's chief information security officer, said:
Criminals prey on our natural respect for authority, using it as a weapon to deceive and manipulate. This is what we see in this new scam modus, where fraudsters pretend to be NTC officials. We call on our customers to be very vigilant and do not fall victim to these scammers.

That being the case, Globe shared some tips to help you protect yourself from a vishing scam (like this fake NTC call):
  • Be wary of unsolicited calls, especially from numbers you don't recognize.
  • Do not give out your personal information or financial details over the phone, even if the caller claims to be from a legitimate organization.
  • If you are unsure about the legitimacy of a call, hang up the phone and call the organization directly using a phone number you know is correct.
  • Report suspicious calls to the authorities.

Globe is dedicated to safeguarding its Globe/TM subscribers from fraudulent activities. The company is collaborating with the NTC and other law enforcement agencies to prosecute fraudsters and ensure their accountability.

Moreover, the telco proactively blocks phone numbers associated with a variety of schemes, such as vishing.

Globe noted that if you receive a call from someone claiming to be from the NTC and asking for your personal information (name, birthday, address, mobile number, etc.), please do not engage. It added that you should hang up the call and report it to the NTC via its official website, www.ntc.gov.ph, or call its hotline at 1682.
